Magenta’s MD Cathy Hayward took to the stage to moderate the FM Inspired conference on 5 October at The O2 Intercontinental Hotel in London. The conference had an exciting line up of speakers to inspire industry practitioners looking to learn new ideas, explore and share knowledge.
Cathy managed the main stage and firstly introduced Oliver Heath, TV personality and biophilic design consultant to the stage. Oliver’s talk was based on how biophilic design sets to improve building occupants’ connection to nature, to cut cost and improve workplace effectiveness. He discussed new research that demonstrates how improving the spaces we work and live in can improve mental and physical health.
Next up, was a panel in discussion about how facilities management function can help improve workplace productivity and boost an organisation’s bottom line. Cathy hosted the debate where panellists discussed the growing challenges facing today’s FM, which suggested there is a renowned appreciation of the workplace’s role in boosting personal and collective productivity. Shortly followed by Stuart Ladds head of FM for College of Policing who discussed the challenge of reducing cost against an increase in business.
Heading in to the afternoon, Cathy introduced Chris Irwin from Distech Controls who discussed the value of IoT in buildings. The talk explored the various ways in which IoT technology can deliver value to building owners and operators, with a focus on wellbeing.
Preston Gan, head of business services and strategy at NHS Grampian, then took to the stage to discuss how FM can add value and transform culture. He put together an insightful presentation which demonstrated the financial challenges of the economic downturn and how to do ‘more with less’. It was very interesting to see how by reviewing business strategies it can open a wide range of opportunities for development.
Global healthcare company GSK customer service director, Dominic Monkman, ended the talks for the day by discussing their service standardisation programme which has been a huge success in improving employee satisfaction and reduced service costs. Dominic’s talk emphasised that with standardisation and strategised programmes, FM really boosts employee’s experience.
The day was finalised with a summary from Cathy and drinks handed out to celebrate the conference. FM Inspired was supported by the UK arm of Clowns Without Borders, an international charity that offers psychological support to communities that have suffered trauma around the world.
