Magenta’s recent research reveals that business priorities are shifting. Since March 2020, the top focus for organisations is to communicate more effectively with employees, the lifeblood of any organisation. Internal communications is not new, but never before has this discipline been so complex, particularly in the wake of the pandemic.
In addition to running a survey of 2,000 employees that revealed 53 per cent do not describe their employer as a good communicator, and two-thirds do not know how, when and where they are supposed to work, Magenta spoke to business leaders to understand where internal communications sits in their organisations. For some, it’s marketing. For others, it’s HR. In workplace change projects, it’s often real estate and FM. For most, it’s a mix. Regardless, 83 per cent of the business leaders surveyed state that business-to-employee comms is more important now prior to March 2020, and yet 42 per cent admit they lack expertise and support in this area.

Jo Sutherland, managing director, Magenta
As managing director of Magenta, Jo’s mission is to help organisations in the built environment to communicate better with their target audience and their employees. Over the past 14 years, she has managed a number of high-profile national and international campaigns for leading brands and organisations. She recently spearheaded research into the way internal communications is managed and shapes clients’ business-to-employee communications agendas. She believes internal communications are an essential part of change management, something essential for many organisations in the wake of the pandemic, with increasingly diverse and dispersed workforces.
Andy Grant, communications manager, Elior UK
Andy has been an integral part of Elior’s communication strategies for over 10 years. He has held HR and talent and resourcing and internal communications positions and has been responsible for operational activities including TUPE, restructuring, and colleague development whilst retaining responsibility for key internal communications activities. Andy manages development of the company extranet, colleague engagement survey, various company newsletters / publications and the organisation’s social media presence. He has also managed a wide range of employee engagement and recognition initiatives.
Andy has completed a Master of Science (MSc) in human resources management and services at The Manchester Metropolitan University.
Kirsty Gaunt, learning and development manager, Anabas
Kirsty is qualified in delivering training, learning design, assessment and quality assurance. With a varied experience of working across differing sectors, Kirsty has developed strategies to ensure that training is fit for business needs. Kirsty has used remote delivery methods since 2012 including webinars and virtual learning environments to deliver, assess and quality audit a variety of professional qualifications using e-portfolio. She is experienced in creating and delivering distance learning training programmes that are fit for purpose and meet individual learner needs. Kirsty has been recognised as an Inspirational Leader in 2020 on the global platform Inspiring Workplaces. She also led Anabas to the finals of the Employee Engagement Awards in 2021.
Kirsty is a member of the Institute of Leadership and Management and a member of the Chartered Management Institute.
